Fun Pictures! The Amazing Race and Drama

We have had a fantastic couple of weeks!

I wanted to share a few pictures from some fun activities that we have done in Reading and Math.

The first set comes from two drama activities that we did while learning about making predictions and tone. The 6th graders were challenged to create a skit showing their predictions about what they thought would happen in The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. Many crews took it upon themselves to create costumes and props to accent their stories. We had a quite a few... ummm... charming... interpretations of Charlotte from some of our male actors.

Next, we played around with tone. First our sixth graders did their best theatrical interpretation of a sentence from The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle as written by Avi. Then they re-mixed the sentences, adding their own vocab to completely change the tone.

Finally, in Math this week the Math Pirates had their first unit test. To review, we joined the Amazing Race for their "Rates, Ratios and Proportions edition." It was an epic scavenger hunt that took us all the way around the school. The Pirates made a gigantic graph, used their math skills to crack several codes, found hidden clues and even got some help from the front office to get their final clues. It was so fun to see these students applying their math skills with such enthusiasm and confidence! They did a wonderful job and found their final prize just before the clock ran out (it wasn't a million dollars, but it was a treat that has helped us learn our ratios and proportions)!

That's what has been happening on the ship! I'm looking forward to another great week. This week we will start learning how to find the area of shapes and exploring characters.

It should be great!
